I need help with ipod touch.I'm not sure how to get applications on it ?

We had to buy an PDA for my girl friend to continue on with her nursing program..I did..Through skyscape, i bought an iPOD TOUCH along with the suggested package of nursing apps..When we receive the pda in the mail,what am i to do ta get the apps on the thing? do i just turn it on and it's already loaded. Do i call the school or,perhaps i use her log on info used for essing her MY(school) web site then, they will recognize her and walk us through..Our first time dealing with this situation so, any help will be greatly appreciated...Thanks
